As the second-largest historic district in New York State, the birthplace of the historic preservation movement, and the home of the first publicly owned historic site in the United States, George Washington's Headquarters, Newburgh is the ideal place to celebrate architectural heritage, connect people to resources, champion local initiatives, and imagine what's next for the city. Each October, Archtober Newburgh does exactly that with 50+ free events, including walks, talks, tours, workshops, and gatherings for both locals and visitors.

The mission of Archtober Newburgh is to open the city up. Newburgh's streets, buildings, and public spaces become a shared classroom—a place to look closely, be hands-on, ask questions, learn new skills, and envision what comes next. We believe design shapes everyday life, that preservation and new ideas belong in the same conversation, and that the people who live here should help shape how the city grows.

Founded in 2023, the festival grew out of Building Shells: Building Community, a three-year project that explored the needs and opportunities surrounding more than 500 vacant buildings in the City of Newburgh.

Today, the festival is presented by The Fullerton and produced in partnership with Archtober NYC. It is organized by volunteers, shaped by collaborators across the Hudson Valley, and made free through the support of our sponsors.
